The modern calligraphy adventure with Artsynibs
Intrigued by the big trend in Modern Calligraphy on the social media and in particular on Instagram we have approached Joyce of Artsynibs, teacher and artist based in Manchester.
Let’s start the modern calligraphy adventure with Artsynibs
Joyce, what made you start with calligraphy?
Calligraphy started out as a means to lower my wedding budget when I first began in 2013. This was when I picked up modern calligraphy, not expecting myself to continue with the practice once the wedding was over. But I did.
I’ve always loved writing and coupled with the fact that my husband is an avid fountain pen collector, it didn’t take much for me to keep up with my calligraphy practice with one of his vintage fountain pens. Eventually, I moved on to practising with pointed pens.
What kind of calligraphy do you prefer?
My practice mainly revolves around Modern Calligraphy and sometimes Brush Lettering. Recently, I’ve taken up the challenge of learning the Spencerian Ladies’ Hand. Between having to practice daily and working on my projects, I find that I’m pretty much working like how I use to at my full-time teaching job.
What are you working on at the moment?
As I’m based in Manchester, I run regular calligraphy workshops there. Apart from that, I busy myself with wedding related projects and collaborations of various nature mainly on my Instagram feed.
What would you say to people willing to start calligraphy?
Calligraphy may seem like a hobby, but I’ve come to realise that it’s a lifestyle. Prepare for a lifestyle change if you’re starting on this calligraventure. Practice time doesn’t require a properly set up work space. It happens as long as you’ve got the basic tools with you – pencil/pen and notepad. So, don’t forget to bring them around with you.
The calligraphy community on Instagram is massive and extremely helpful. Get on it, ask for help and journey together with one another.
