May Artist of the Month...Marisa Pardo

Meet our new Artist of the Month... Marisa Pardo. Based in California USA @mar.dsign loves exploring and learning about different lettering styles. Read on to find out more about our Artist of the Month!

What is your background and when did your passion for Calligraphy and Lettering begin?

I always loved painting, drawing. I remember when I was in high school I loved making greeting cards for my friends, at that time I didn’t know that was lettering. I later studied Graphic Design and found interest in Art History and Typography. And even though I learned about font styles I never tried to make my own. In 2021, I found a lettering book and decided to give it a try. It quickly grew on me and became my passion.

Who / Where do you take your inspiration from?

I found inspiration in everything around me. Music, Nature and Literature are my typical starting places. I like finding quotes and deciphering how they make me feel. These feelings help me decide which colors and styles I want to use. I like the work of Stefan Kunz, Nico Ng and Snooze among others.

What in your opinion is the hardest and the most rewarding parts of working in a creative industry?

The most rewarding part is the support I get from the community. I appreciate the encouraging comments and connections I have made with other artists around the world. The hardest parts are the creative blocks and pressure. I am a perfectionist and very critical of my work.

Do you have a favourite style?

Currently, I am exploring and learning about different styles like 3D, Victorian and more. I like applying different lettering styles and effects depending on the message.

What are the most exciting projects you have worked on and what are you working on at the moment?

Every project is exciting because I pour my emotions into it. When someone reaches out to do a colab it means a lot to me because, even though this is a hobby, I know that people like what I do. At the moment I am working on a personal project, making some videos I’ll be posting soon.

How does your work relate to your everyday life?

Having a creative outlet is extremely important for mental health. Lettering can increase visual motor skills and encourage concentration. It also helps me disconnect, stay positive, creative and relax during stressful times.

What are your favourite tools to use?

For most of my pieces I use a pencil, eraser, and watercolor brush pens. I sketch the design in pencil and follow up with the brush pens. But I like to use a variety of tools like dip pens, markers, glass pens and more.

What would your advice be to people new to the creative industry and any tips on how to get started?

It’s all about being patient and practicing. Also don’t compare yourself to others, everyone’s journey is different. Don’t give up and practice at least 10 minutes a day. Learn the rules and remember that your strokes don’t need to be perfect the first time. You will improve with time and practice. Also start with tools for beginners, buying too many or the wrong materials can be overwhelming. Start with a pencil and maybe some basic materials and get comfortable with those. Also don’t forget to have fun and enjoy the process!
