Celebrate World Calligraphy Day with Manuscript Pen Company on the 16th August 2017!

Join Manuscript Pen Company to celebrate the art of calligraphy and hand lettering in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Hosting the event, the Pen Museum welcomes Manuscript and a whole host of world renowned creative artists to celebrate calligraphy and hand lettering trends.

Explore the Pen Museum and learn about the many pen companies of Birmingham and the history of the trade starting from quills and dip pens to the modern day fountain pen. Step back in time and try your hand at creating your very own steel pen nib using traditional machinery!

Whether you are an expert, a beginner who’s just getting started or simply an admirer of beautiful writing, come and join Manuscript and your favourite artists including Modern Calligrapher Joyce Lee of Artsynibs, Graphic Designer and Calligrapher Alice Mazilli of Ampersand Alice, Artist, Designer and Lettering Specialist Rob Draper, Traditional Calligrapher Stephen Duckett, Contemporary Italian Calligrapher Sandro Bonomo, Handwriting Specialist Sandra Grayson and many more at this free event from 11am – 4pm.

Workshop Agenda:

12pm – 12.30pm – Handwriting Workshop  for children with Alice Mazilli of Ampersand Alice

Just because it’s the holidays, that doesn’t mean you have to put your pens away! Keep writing this summer and learn handwriting techniques that will put you at the top of your class. Get ready for the new school term and let Alice Mazilli teach you top tips to improve your handwriting style. Never get complaints for having messy handwriting again!

Alice Mazilli, a Calligrapher/Graphic Designer based in London. She has worked on an extensive client list on complex and interesting projects – everything from wedding stationery and branding, to onsite demonstration of calligraphy and lettering.

1pm – 1.30pm – Modern Calligraphy for Beginners with Artsynibs

Are you inspired by the art of Modern Calligraphy and creating beautiful writing? Then join Joyce Lee of Artsynibs for this 30 minute workshop to get you started. Start with the key basics like sitting correctly and assembling your pen through to creating beautiful strokes, letters and words. By the end of the workshop you will have acquired all the skills to get started on a calligraphy journey of your own!

The Artsynibs story began when Joyce Lee left her job as an English teacher in Singapore and moved to the United Kingdom. Relocation spelt new experiences and challenges, hence beginning a journey of learning to adapt to a different environment.

Inspired by her love for calligraphy and the creative scene in Manchester, Artsynibs was conceived. To realise the dream of bringing back the beautiful art of writing, Artsynibs relies on traditions to navigate through the twenty-first century.

2pm – 2.30pm – Hand Lettering Work Shop with Rob Draper

From street signs to movie posters and chalk boards to menus, hand lettering is everywhere and this latest craze is taking the typography world by storm. Create your own lettering style with the guidance of world renowned artist and designer, Rob Draper. Let your creative juices flow and learn how to take a letter or word and create as many different styles as you can think of, creating your own distinct lettering!

Rob DraperRob Draper is a world renowned Artist and designer. He specialises in hand lettering for branding and identity, editorial, large scale works, retail and apparel. Having worked with a host of celebrated brands including The Golden Globes, Nike, Gap and Penguin to name a few, Rob’s passion for lettering and creativity has enabled him to work with a diverse range of clients, developing a range of ground breaking art.

3pm – 3.30pm – Traditional Calligraphy Workshop with Stephen Duckett

Celebrate World Calligraphy Day with a Traditional Calligraphy workshop with Stephen Duckett. Learn the art of beautiful writing and traditional script forms whilst creating the perfect stroke. Develop your own calligraphy style whilst learning about the time-honoured  techniques that continue to inspire lettering forms today!

    Hi Sandra. There is no need for a ticket, the entry to the museum and activities on the day will be free and will be on a first come, first served basis- so make sure you get there early to secure your place!
