Royal Recognition for the Pen Museum, Birmingham
Located in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham, the Pen Museum promises to be an exciting day out. Steeped in history, and once a former pen factory, the Pen Museum celebrates a historic industry that remains vibrant today.
Recently recognised by Her Royal Majesty the Queen, the Pen Museum has been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services; testament to the time spent by volunteers in restoring its heritage as well as showcasing fun and modern pens available on the market today.
Manuscript Pen Company once operated in the Jewellery quarter as ‘D. Leonardt and Co’, and shares a rich history in the Birmingham based pen industry. During the 19th Century, 75% of everything written in the world was with a ‘Birmingham pen’ that had been produced at one of the 100 factories that were in operation. With roots firmly placed in Birmingham, Manuscript has long supported the Pen Museum and has been heavily involved in its recent regeneration.
Today, a visit to the Pen Museum offers a fascinating history in pens and calligraphy; as well as the opportunity to be one of the first to discover new pens at the cutting edge of modern technology.
You will experience life in a pen factory over 100 years ago and try your hand at some of the processes involved in steel pen manufacturing, (some of which are still used today). A Victorian school room provides period dress, with the opportunity to practise writing lines with a quill and with over 5000 objects on display there is so much to learn and lots to do.

Boasting a unique facility, the purpose built CalliCreative room is an inspiring work space. School groups, calligraphers, pen enthusiasts and more are invited to explore their creativity. Calligraphy courses will be held over the coming year; including traditional calligraphic lettering and modern techniques which continue to take flight on a global scale.
