August Artist of the Month...Shin Yeoh

Meet our new Artist of the Month... Shin Yeoh. Based in Penang, Malaysia, @shin_yeoh has a love of modern calligraphy, watercolour and brush lettering. Read on to find out more about our Artist of the Month!

What is your background and when did your passion for Calligraphy and Lettering begin?

I’m the founder of Odd Crafter (A space that provides all kinds of creative workshops, a place that gathers art lovers, a platform for artists to shine), a calligrapher, and also a watercolor artist based in Penang, Malaysia. I used to be a graphic designer. While doing freelance design I eventually got into calligraphy as a hobby and I will write whenever I’m free until my first calligraphy project came in. After the project, I realize that I should call myself a calligrapher. There's where my calligrapher journey began.

Who / Where do you take your inspiration from?

I usually get inspiration from calligraphers on Instagram, one of my top favorites is Minortismay.

What in your opinion is the hardest and the most rewarding parts of working in a creative industry?

The challenging part is I need to deal with all my clients by myself, especially when I’m arranging meetings with clients.

Another thing is when I am facing project deadlines, if one of the projects is overlapping the others, work could get very busy. But all the hard work pays off when I the clients / customers love and appreciate my artwork.

Do you have a favourite style?

I do watercolour lettering and brush lettering too but I love modern calligraphy the most!

What are the most exciting projects you have worked on and what are you working on at the moment?

The first calligraphy project that came to me is one of the most unforgettable’s.

I’m requested to personalize customers’ name on 1600 pieces of VIPS thank you cards. The project is quite challenging because I have to finish all of them in 2 weeks. Other than customizing order, I do provide calligraphy workshops and also services for on-site event.

How does your work relate to your everyday life?

People always say “ Do what you love and love what you do”

My daily routine will always be practicing and exploring more design or calligraphy, usually, I will do practice at different environment like café, outdoor  and etc because I believe different environments will bring different inspirations.

What are your favourite tools to use?

I love brause steno nib with oblique holder and also textured paper!

What would your advice be to people new to the creative industry and any tips on how to get started?

KEEP PRACTICE. The only way to achieve high quality artwork.

CHALLENGE YOURSLEF! Do more experiment on different calligraphy style by using different materials!
