January Artist of the Month...Maha Gul

Meet our new Artist of the Month... Maha Gul. Based in Pakistan, @mahascript is passionate about creating variations of copperplate script letters with flourishes. Read on to find out more about our Artist of the Month!

What is your background and when did your passion for Calligraphy and Lettering begin?

I completed my master's degree in Statistics. I worked as a math teacher in various schools for five years. My writing has been outstanding since my childhood. I got the chance to showcase my Arabic calligraphy skills throughout my professional career. I decided to concentrate on my innate skills and pursue calligraphy professionally after that. I enrolled in a Calligraphy program where I studied Arabic and English Calligraphy

Who / Where do you take your inspiration from?

When it comes to English calligraphy, Mr. Jake Weidmann is the model I follow. He is a great master penman as well as a talented artist. I got my inspiration for Arabic calligraphy from Vahid Jazayeri.

What in your opinion is the hardest and the most rewarding parts of working in a creative industry?

It's quite challenging to keep our ideas and imagination under control and turn them into a remarkable work of art. Making a masterpiece involves more than just applying paint to the canvas. It's also not easy, but once you get going, it gets easier. Determining your target audience and how to satisfy them with a unique and inventive work of art can also be challenging at times. Every time I artistically translate my ideas onto paper, I feel satisfied. The fact that it stimulates my thinking is the most satisfying aspect.

Do you have a favourite style?

I adore creating variations of copperplate script letters with flourishes. Kufic, which is written with the use of reed pen, is another preferred writing style. It's quite difficult to write a lovely piece using reed pen.

What are the most exciting projects you have worked on and what are you working on at the moment?

I devote a lot of time, effort, and energy into each project, which is why they are all interesting to me.I always enjoy experimenting with different approaches on canvas.

How does your work relate to your everyday life?

I've developed the practice of thinking deeply and approaching problems with an open mind, and I do so without making others uncomfortable. I continually try to use my creative industry to produce tasty meals in a variety of ways.

What are your favourite tools to use?

Broad edge nibs and oblique holders are two of my favorite tools. My favorite tool for creating vibrant artwork is brush pen markers.

What would your advice be to people new to the creative industry and any tips on how to get started?

I would advise remembering the three Ps: practice, patience, and positivity.
