June Artist of the Month... Oshin

Meet our new Artist of the Month... Oshin! A self taught calligraphy artist, she found peace in exploring the arts outside her high powered job at a US tech company. Now she creates custom calligraphy pieces and even poetry pieces. Read on to find out more...

What is your background and when did your passion for Calligraphy and learning begin?

I’m a self-taught calligraphy artist and a full-time finance executive at a USA based tech company. My journey into calligraphy began as a quiet escape—what started as a meditative hobby gradually blossomed into a soulful practice and eventually, a creative business. I found solace and self-expression in the graceful rhythm of strokes, and over time, I realized I was telling visual stories through letters.

Who / Where do you take your inspiration from?

My inspiration flows from the beauty of everyday life—sunsets, poetry, minimalism, nature, and quiet moments of reflection. The timeless elegance of handwritten scripts across cultures fascinates me. I’m especially moved by the emotional cadence of poems, which often become the muse behind my work.

What in your opinion is the hardest and the most rewarding parts of working in a creative industry?

The hardest part is embracing creative blocks and self-doubt with grace, especially when art becomes your livelihood. Yet, it’s also the most rewarding—every message from someone touched by my work, every project that travels across borders, feels incredibly fulfilling. Art has a unique way of reaching hearts, and being part of that journey is priceless.

Do you have a favourite style?

Yes, I’m drawn to contemporary pointed pen scripts and flourished modern calligraphy. I adore styles that blend tradition with softness and a whisper of personal flair—something that feels both graceful and grounded.

What are the most exciting projects you have worked on and what are you working on at the moment?

One of the most exciting moments has been creating custom calligraphy pieces for poets from 28 different countries, with my artwork even reaching Belgium. I also craft calligraphy videos for poets, bringing their words to life through letterforms. Currently, I’m working on expanding my offerings and curating a new collection that intertwines poetry, nature, and ink.

How does your work relate to your everyday life?

Calligraphy weaves seamlessly into my life—it balances the analytical nature of my day job, offering a peaceful, creative release. It also anchors my mindfulness practice, reminding me to slow down and appreciate the beauty of small details.

What are your favourite tools to use?

I love using pointed pens, oblique holders, and a rich variety of inks. A Nikko G nib, a smooth Rhodia pad, and walnut ink often feel like old friends. I also enjoy exploring digital tools for editing and creating content for social media.

What would your advice be to people new to the creative industry and any tips on how to get started?

Begin with curiosity, not perfection. Allow yourself to be a beginner, to explore and make mistakes. Practice consistently and share your work fearlessly—your voice matters. Connect with the creative community, stay inspired, and most importantly, keep the joy of creating at the heart of it all.
