October Artist of the Month...Saher Beg

Meet our new Artist of the Month... Saher Beg. Based in Ontario, Canada @letteringbysaher is a calligrapher and signage artist whose favourite writing style is modern calligraphy. Read on to find out more about our Artist of the Month!

What is your background and when did your passion for Calligraphy and Lettering begin?

I come from a professional background with a master's degree in Human Resources and a career in HR. However, I made a significant change in my life after the birth of my daughter five years ago. Dealing with postpartum depression, I found solace and joy in creating handlettered art. It became my passion and a source of healing. Two years ago, I decided to turn this passion into a source of income. The journey of honing my skills was a fulfilling period, and I've been loving what I do ever since

Who / Where do you take your inspiration from?

I draw inspiration from my surroundings, constantly seeking creativity in all things. I firmly believe there's a lesson to be found in everything around us

What in your opinion is the hardest and the most rewarding parts of working in a creative industry?

Being an artist is indeed a cherished gift, yet it comes with its share of challenges. Some fail to recognize the effort invested in our creations, questioning our value and dedication. This can be disheartening. However, the key is to raise awareness about the significance of our work, the love and effort poured into each piece. We must persevere and continue creating. The greatest joy of being an artist lies in the appreciation I receive for my creations, the warmth of people’s compliments, their passion for my work, and the culmination of meticulous planning. When individuals begin to acknowledge and identify with my artistic identity and the beauty I strive to add to the world, that is the most precious reward for me.

Do you have a favourite style?

As a calligrapher and signage artist, my favorite writing style is modern calligraphy. Five years ago, I began handlettering purely out of passion, drawn to its beauty and the soothing satisfaction it brought. Today, I've turned this passion into a full-time endeavor, extending my artistry beyond paper to mediums like chalkboard, mirror, glass, and wood

What are the most exciting projects you have worked on and what are you working on at the moment?

In my art career, I've had the pleasure of engaging in a variety of exciting projects. Notable among them include enhancing the external appearance of a small library, creating captivating window art for cafes and chalkboard menus, and crafting a welcoming sign for a picturesque indigenous farm within my city. Each of these projects brought me immense joy. Presently, I'm dedicated to adding a touch of autumnal charm to the windows of a retirement home, breathing life into them, and also working on additional chalkboard art that beautifully captures the essence of the autumn season and wedding place cards using pointed nip pens from manuscript.

How does your work relate to your everyday life?

My art provides a way to express my emotions. It brings beauty, color, and creativity into my environment. It adds pleasure to our daily life. Through art, I can relieve my stress and help in promoting mental well-being

What are your favourite tools to use?

As a signage artist, I have a deep passion for working with chalks, acrylic paints, and chalk paints. My canvas often includes chalkboards, windows, glass, and mirrors. The process entails a lot of planning and adherence to guidelines, but I find immense joy in every aspect of my craft

What would your advice be to people new to the creative industry and any tips on how to get started?

Art is a thing of beauty! Embracing your creativity is a precious gift. Begin with patience. There is no need to rush the creative process. Keep in mind that practice leads to improvement. Persevere, and forge connections with those who share your interests. Relish the act of creation but never plagiarize others' work. My singular piece of advice: avoid comparing your work to that of other artists. Draw inspiration from them, but always remember that you are unique and possess the ability to create what others cannot. You are the best at being yourself, let your creations reflect that.
